Patricia Therese Whalen, Ph.D., APR

Patricia T. Whalen is currently a consultant and educator in the area of public relations and marketing communication. She is the former director of DePaul University’s graduate program in public relations and advertising and served on the faculty at Northwestern University’s Medill Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) graduate program for eight years.
She has consulted for a number of consumer, healthcare, higher education, and business-to-business clients in the areas of consumer research, crisis management, strategic planning, marketing communications, and organizational change. She has also provided strategic counsel for agency clients that included Borders Books and Music; Campbell Soup Company; Koch Industries; Ball Park Franks, Medical College of Ohio, and Owens-Corning.
Pat is the author of two books: A Marketers Guide to Public Relations in the 21st Century (Thomson, 2006), co-authored with Thomas L. Harris; and Corporate Communication From A To Z –An Encyclopedia For Public Relations & Marketing Professionals (IABC, 2005). She authored the IABC’s 2002 top-selling research study entitled, "How Communication Drives Merger Success," and contributed chapters on mergers and acquisitions for the book, Inside Corporate Communications (Jossey-Bass, 2006 and 2010).
Prior to her academic and consulting career, Pat spent 17 years in senior corporate marketing and communication positions. She served as the top corporate communication executive for a Fortune 300 automotive manufacturing firm, where she was awarded a PRSA Silver Anvil for crisis communication. She also spent eight years with Comsat Corporation, a Washington, D.C.-based international telecommunications firm (subsequently acquired by Lockheed Martin) where she served as Director of Marketing and Communication.
Pat holds a doctorate in mass media from Michigan State University, a master's degree in business administration from Indiana University, and a bachelor’s degree in English from the Ohio State University. She is accredited with the Public Relations Society of America and serves on its Board of Ethics and Professional Standards.
