Chapter 53: Immersive 3-D Virtual Worlds: Avatars at Work
|
The difference between a traditional webinar or video conferencing and a virtual world is the difference between looking in a window and walking into a room! Using an avatar, which could be viewed as your alter-ego, you are able to engage with an unlimited number of people in any environment. A value of meetings in virtual worlds is that it reduces the carbon footprint compared to meetings people must fly or drive to. Schneider Electric and IBM are given as an example when they chose to meet in Second Life. Consider virtual life for experiences beyond meetings, such as events, mentoring and role-playing. Another advantage of virtual worlds as in data and product visualization. The technology is here; we must now think big and act bold, but start small and iterate fast. This chapter gives a compelling argument for taking advantage of the technology and using it to our organization’s advantage.
