The public relations role in the aviation industry is often more dynamic than in other industries as it is sometimes is called into play after an accident or incident. The aviation industry, including general aviation, is heavily regulated and the PR professional must understand the regulating bodies. Rob Doughty, former communications professional for United Airlines, is interviewed on the competitiveness and visibility of aviation PR as well as the special requirements for a practitioner in this field. A frightening case of cabin decompression on Southwest Airlines is discussed with an explanation of Southwest’s corporate culture helping the company to overcome it and for this to be spread through social media. The concluding case deals with the much publicized issue of criticism of CEO and government official use of private jets and how the industry made people understand the value of using private jets under certain circumstances.
