Chapter 22: State and Local Government Relations: Guiding Principles

Over the past 30 years, American businesses and organizations of all types have found that many of their challenges and opportunities with government rest in the legislative bodies of cities, counties and states. Good examples are the issues of product liability and medical malpractice, where what might be relatively innocuous for a manufacturer or physician in one state presents a major challenge in another. To effectively deal with state and local government requires, among other things, superior data gathering, financial resources and exceptionally effective “troops” on the ground. Invaluable advice in this arena is given, from respecting geography, to dealing with social media, to constantly staying up to date on issues that affect your organization.
