Chapter 12: Mergers and Acquisitions: Communicating Between the Lines
Merger & Acquisition activity, which dropped during the Recession, began to surge in 2010. The shareholder base is now more empowered. The case dealt with BHP’s unsolicited offer to buy Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan and Potash Coporation’s reaction to that offer. The case demonstrates that clear consistent communication with shareholders, government officials, employees, the media and others creates a positive result. Driving forces for M & As, types of M & A communications, hostile defense (with the case of NRG Energy and Excelon Corporation), and hostile offense is also treated. Finally, we are reminded that ativism doesn’t end when the deal closes.
