Modern public relations emerged at the end of the 19th century with the development of industries, the railroad, banking, etc. The use of PR during the world wars is also discussed. Then, the globalization of public relations is explained. Following this, Rear Admiral Brent Baker explains the roll of the presidential press secretary in the area of public affairs. He traces this from Woodrow Wilson through President Obama, with a colorful description of the various communication styles of the presidents and the coordinated role of each president’s press secretary to frame his image and deliver his message.
